Positional sacrifices

A positional sacrifice is one that sacks a piece in order to enable a more open and useful position for the player. As one matures, one realizes that these are justified. Take for example Giuoco Piano. If black plays Bc5 then white can trick black into a check and a pin if played accurately. Another popular opening defense is the Ng5 opening where a pawn is sacrificed to attack a bishop. This leads to white's pieces uselessly scattered around the board.
