The castling dilemma

This is of course a topic with a wide base. It depends on numerous variables like the position, future strategies, and the player's own preferences. Some players may prefer mostly king side castling as it provides better defense and it can be performed earlier in the game than queen side castling. Ideally it is always better to wait for your opponent to castle and then figure out your decision. Castling is primarily meant to move the king away from the center of the board and to safety and hence castling must be done with an adequate number of pieces protecting it. An example of this is putting the bishop in front of the king in king side castling and he knight above it. This is tough to penetrate. Queen side castling leaves the king more exposed as it doesn't cover all the pawns in front of it. Further it takes time to remove all the pieces and make way for the king and rook. However, queen side castling makes way for the queen side rook in the center and it is able to break through the defense of the opponent's king. Beware of the 'a' file pawn though which slowly advances.
